Public Playground’s Are Germ Factories.
My kids love to go to our local park and play on the playground equipment. They enjoy climbing, sliding, swinging and crawling all over the playground, but 9 out of 10 times they will end up getting sick a few days later. Now my kids do not live in a bubble, they are exposed to germs daily both in the home and out in public so that there immune systems are strong and healthy.
How Nasty Are Public Playgrounds?
A study of hundreds of public playgrounds across the country showed that as many as 1-in-5 were contaminated with mucus, blood, urine, sweat, saliva and even fecal matter. Viruses that were discovered on public playgrounds included E Coli, Salmonella, Straph, Herpes, Diarrhea, Hepatitis A and Strep.
Why Are Playgrounds So Full Of Germs?
Children. Think about it, you have hundreds of small children playing on the playground equipment, some with colds, some coughing, some sneezing, some in dirty diapers, some scratching everywhere, some with open cuts and on and on. In most cases public playground equipment is never cleaned or sanitized.
What’s The Solution?
Playground sanitizing should be done on a biannual schedule to help reduce the chance of children coming in contact with the many germs that could be on the equipment. Cleaning with an anti-micro bacterial cleaning agent can help reduce the possibility of children getting sick from all the germs on the equipment.
As A Parent What Can I Do?
If you frequent a public playground you owe it to yourself and your children to find out if it is cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis, if it is not regularly cleaned find out who you can go about making sure that the city or county that owns the park puts a program in place to address playground equipment sanitizing so that your children and your neighbors children can play on the equipment without the fear of getting sick.
